Here's the answer...
A Mangle or a New Simplified Electric Ironer. It was either gas or electrically heated and sure beat the old hand-pushed "sad" irons. Unfortunately both clothes and fingers got caught (and whatever else)-hence the nickname that stuck- THE MANGLE!
